Is it Rosie the Riveter?! No! That’s a male northern flicker vying for the attention of the female perched on the tail of our aircraft. You may think he’s mistaking the metal for wood but in fact he’s a really smart bird to figure out that metal makes him sound bigger and more virile than the competition. You may have seen/heard woodpeckers drilling on gutters during this time of year.
If you think they’re giving themselves a concussion you don’t need to worry! Their tongues are 1/3 the length of their body and wrap around their brain acting like shock absorbers and stabilizers to protect it during high-speed pecking.
